Moving Tips

Do You Need To Move It?

Have a serious think about the real need to move all that you own. Adopt a “less is more” approach and have a garage sale or call the auction center and scale back on the things you don’t need. The lower number of items you have the less you need to move. The more stuff you sell or give away, the less time and energy you are going to use moving an unwanted item into storage at your new location with experienced removalists.

Efficient Wardrobe Box Packing

It is a great idea to pack hanging items tightly in the wardrobe box so things won’t move around and fall off the hangers when in transit.

Fill strong shopping bags with sturdy handles with bulk closet items such as shoes, belts, and jeans. Put these in the bottom of the wardrobe boxes then add your hanging clothes. You’ll have a lesser number of boxes and it keeps all wardrobe items together which is so handy when the task of unpacking starts. The use of shopping bags with good handles will make it easy to retrieve from the bottoms of the tall wardrobe box.

It is important to not make these so heavy that you struggle to move them and risk personal injury.

Pack ahead

The smart thing you can do ahead of the move is pack non day-to-day items so there is less packing to do on the day of the move. There is no need for retaining all your pots and pans and measuring cups etc. given your move, rather than dinner parties, will be the focus of remaining weeks in your residence. The same can be said for winter clothes if it is summer time and vice versa if its winter. To save you a large workload it’s a smart move to live out of a suitcase for a short time. You can do the same in your bathroom by just using your travel toiletries and pack everything else away from the bathroom scales to extra stores of toothpaste and toilet paper.

Don’t overfill boxes

Make sure the packing of all your boxes is done in such a way that they are not over filled. It is important that all your boxes close properly so that they can be stacked on top of each other in the truck.  Over-packing boxes puts you at risk of damaging the contents, especially if the box is compressed or crushed.  A good idea is to pack small fragile items in small boxes and place them into a larger sized box surrounded by bubble wrap.

Pre-Pack Cleaning Supplies

If you must clean your residence before moving, prior to moving out put together a basic cleaning kit in readiness.  Clean all that is possible well ahead of time. The likes of the inside of kitchen cupboards, oven, interior of windows etc. and pack way any unneeded cleaning supplies.

Make Full Use Of Travel Luggage

Fill your travel bag luggage and duffle type bags with clothing, sheets, towels and other soft material items.

Keep Valuable Items Safe

It’s important to keep valuable possessions, such as fragile laptops, expensive jewelry, important legal documents, high tech camera’s and controllers etc. with you.

Packing Materials

Packing materials such as bubble wrap can be expensive if extensively used and clutter landfills. It could be a good idea to consider a cheap alternative to bubble wrap such as old newspapers or recycled paper.  Packer’s newsprint made of recycled materials that are biodegradable, recyclable, and compostable are a smart way to go and helps the environment at the same time.

Moving Liquids

Moving liquids is tricky at the best of times but if you must move them, use either a sealable container or waterproof bags and double bag them.

Tools

It is a smart idea to keep tools you may need to reassemble your furniture with you as well. For the sake of packing one or two extra things like a hammer and large crescent for the unexpected new location adjustment, this could save you a lot of time and heart ache for the small effort required to put these to one side.
